What’s Stopping You From Getting Organized

buriedclutterThere’s been something on my mind lately, and it’s time I express it.

Sometimes I get off the phone and I just want to cry. Today is one of those days. For many people who reach out for my help, when it rains, it pours. Not only are they buried in clutter, there’s a recent death of a loved one, a family member with physical challenges or critical illness,  a flood or fire, and other trying situations contributing to their drained energy, lack of sleep and inability to focus. I can only imagine how overwhelming and stressful it must be. I truly feel for them. The immense courage that it takes to finally pick up the phone (or send an email) to ask for help is not lost on me. And I’m humbled and honored that they trust me enough to share their story.

Very often, potential clients will inquire about how we can help, and then procrastinate on taking the first step. It’s not unusual for me to get a call five (or more) years later, when they’ve hit the breaking point. If there are budget restrictions, I understand. Like updating or renovating your home, it may be something you are saving towards. Or perhaps you are forever in the process of researching to find the company that best fits your organizing needs; although it’s a good idea to shop around, watch out for analysis paralysis (over-analyzing to the point where decision or action is never taken, in effect paralyzing the outcome).

Although it’s always better late than never, it saddens me to know that had our clients opened their door when they were first prompted to contact us, they wouldn’t be in so much pain right now.

One thing I hear all the time is that people are embarrassed and ashamed to let us in. Maybe that’s why it takes so long. If you are feeling this way, please know that we are not there to judge. We understand that there are many different factors which contributed to the situation you find yourself in, most of them beyond your control. It’s not your fault. So please stop blaming and shaming because that’s not helpful.

If there’s a gap between your vision for your home and how you want to live – and where you are right now – we want to help. For many of you, getting our help requires that you step outside your comfort zone. Believe me, it will only be for a brief moment. Once you let one of our professional organizers inside, the feelings that stem from fear will be replaced with a feeling of liberation. Your life will change.

If you hired a professional organizer a year ago, what would your life look like now? If you don’t take any action towards tackling the clutter, what will your life look like a year from now? What will it take for you to finally take the leap and let us in? I’m interested in reading your comments.

I have a plan that I am executing, however it can’t be a 3 or 4 day attempt similar to what your show “Neat” does. For the last month and a half, I have slowly but steadily reduced my slides from 5,000 to 1,200 and sent them off to a company to get digitized, I have scanned and emptied a 4 drawer file cabinet, I have scanned 7 photo albums, and sold 3 of my 4 bins of Halloween decorations and the empty photo albums on a Facebook yardsale. I am now copying on my 8mm video cassettes to DVDs and in a few weeks (around Dec 1st) will be selling 5 bins of Christmas decorations, my slide projector, projection screen, and slide carousels again on a local Facebook yardsale. It is so much easier acquiring things than letting them go but I am feeling so much lighter (mentally and physically) it is just short of a miracle. Thanks for the inspiration Hellen!

Wow Rochelle, that’s amazing – you are a superstar! I know a lot of people have good intentions to do this type of thing but get too busy and continuously put it off. Just goes to show that consistent action leads to progress and results. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

That is amazing what Rochelle does. I have one rule that stop me from accumulating: one in, one out.
