Is Self-doubt Eroding Your Confidence?

I was having dinner with a good friend when she told me she recently hired a coach who specializes in overcoming “Imposter Syndrome”. She felt it was holding her back and decided to do something about it. That was the first time I heard the term. My curiosity was piqued and I wondered why someone as smart, talented and super successful as my friend felt she needed coaching.

When I researched Imposter Syndrome, I was shocked to discover that this affects high achievers, including some of the brightest CEOS and most successful entrepreneurs. Top performers in the sports world also suffer from this disruptive condition.

It often affects with people in creative careers – actors dancers, speakers, writers (my friend is a writer), and can be responsible for stunting their growth. In fact, some of the most famous singers, TV and film stars have struggled with this dibilitating mindset.

Now I understood my writer friend. And the crazy thing is I could totally relate to more than a few of the symptoms, especially when I think back to the younger me (I’ve done a lot of work in this area over the years).

Symptoms of Imposter Syndrome

  • self-doubt/fear of failure (avoid tasks outside your comfort zone, over-prepare)
  • strive to be the best in all you do/perfectionism (will edit, re-edit, redo and go over things way more times than necessary)
  • no matter how much you accomplish, you feel you should be achieving more (go above and beyond to prove your worth)
  • feel like a fraud (i.e. ‘Am I really good enough to be doing this work or is this just good luck?’ (not feeling smart enough, skilled enough, or educated enough – no matter how many certifications you’ve earned)
  • fear of criticism

Although I’m a recovering perfectionist, it took me many years (and a lot of healing) to get over this. I’l never forget the time I received just one negative comment after a speaking event and, although the other 99% were glowing, I was devastated and wanted to quit speaking in public. Thankfully, my coach got me through that, but it took awhile.

Although coaching can be helpful in moving past this limiting mindset, I have found hypnotherapy can shift it much faster. Hypnosis allows us to talk directly to the part of you that recorded these negative thoughts based on experiences dating so far back you’ve probably forgotten them – but they are still there, running the show. Hypnosis allows us to reset your mindset through direct suggestions that lead to powerful, positive changes quickly.

I know first-hand how limiting this condition can be. Now it’s my mission to help high achievers dissolve self-doubt, break free from the prison of perfectionism and remember how powerful and perfect they already are. It’s crucial because I believe each person has important messages to share with the world – and self-doubt shouldn’t get in the way of that.
